With most of the Philippines still under the General Community Quarantine (GCQ), there have been limits to our movements because of social and physical distancing plus the regulation to stay at home as much as possible.
So, if you’re not outside buying essentials or visiting your loved ones (while still following the COVID-19 guidelines), what can you do in your apartment? What indoor endeavors should you discover and explore?
Here are activities you can try while staying in the comforts and safety of your own condo.
1. Learn
If there is one thing that the pandemic can’t stop us from doing, it’s certainly learning. The amount of knowledge you can acquire with just a click of a button is truly astounding.
But I encourage you to take it a step further and try an online class! Masterclass seems to be the most popular platform at the moment and they offer free classes on your first 24 hours.
On the contrary, if your budget is limited, Google and Youtube are your friends. There is a wide range of topics you can delve into, from fascinating science to fun animation. Just make sure that the sources are credible, so that you avoid misinformation.
2. Escape
And I don’t mean this literally.
There is a way for us to escape without actually going outside and driving off to a faraway place. That is through activities such as reading and watching films.
You may have books stocked in your shelf that you haven’t read yet or movies that you haven’t gotten around to watching. Our lives pre-COVID were admittedly a lot busier, so there were a lot of things that were put on the back burner.
Another activity you can try that involves “escaping" is taking a virtual museum tour! A lot of famous institutes around the world are offering these including the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul.
Let’s not forget about exploring local take-outs and deliveries. One day, you’re experimenting with Arabian cuisine and then the next, you’re feasting on fast food. We Filipinos love to eat and you know what? This can serve as an escape too.
3. Interact
Virtual conversations and interactions are the norm. I have personally witnessed this with my parents who have had video call after video call with their friends. Not just one-on-ones but group video calls as well!
It’s an amazing sight. Some may even say that the elders are engaging in such calls more often than younger people like me.
So, what’s stopping you from doing it? Especially if you’re feeling a little clingy. Short-lived visits to your loved ones may not be enough. In fact, why don’t you propose a watch party with your friends or play virtual games with your officemates?
The slow internet connection may prove to be a nuisance for this one, but consider it a part of the memory that you’re creating with the people that matter to you the most. After all, nothing in life is perfect.
4. Start a hobby
If you don’t already have a hobby that you’re passionate about (which is also possible to do at home), then try out a new one. The best part about it is that you’re not alone! There are many people that are also giving new hobbies a shot.
From cooking and baking to working out and creating DIY crafts, the activities to dive into are endless. And you can get your loved ones to do it with you too.
5. Reflect
With the noise of negative news and our personal problems, reflecting may be difficult for us. However, it is essential, so that we can keep living with an open mind and heart.
Take the time to think about the blessings that you have. Offer gratitude to whatever or whoever possible. We only get to live our lives once, so we have to make the most of it.
Research has also shown that being grateful is good for your health.
Final thoughts
The activities that I enumerated don’t have to be temporary or just a coping mechanism to the impact of the pandemic. Although you are free to do so.
Should you decide to take on at least one of them, I implore you to continue doing it even when we finally get to a life after COVID. Because we will get through this no matter what.
As John Lennon once said, “Everything will be okay in the end. If it’s not okay, it’s not the end."
