How to Get Rid of Cooking Smells in Your Apartment
   by Nina Tambal  •  Feb 19, 2019  •  General
Picture this: you’ve just spent a couple of hours creating food magic in the kitchen.

You feel accomplished, because of the yummy dish you’ve conjured up. But you’re also tired, because of all the hard work you’ve put in.

So, you go ahead and try to get a quick rest on your couch before eating your delicious meal.

But what is this? There’s a distinct smell lurking around. Food odor from the cooking battlefield.

It’s unpleasant and not relaxing at all. And you don’t even know how to get rid of the aggravating scent.

Fret not! I’ve got your back. Here are five of many natural and easy ways to get rid of cooking smells.

1.   Boil cinnamon or citrus peels
There is nothing like the smell of pleasant fragrances such as cinnamon or citrus. Which is why I highly recommend using it as a way to get rid of cooking smells.

Replace the odor of your culinary work at the kitchen by boiling a few sticks of cinnamon or citrus peels for at least five minutes and leave it to cool. This certain tip will come in handy if you to use these ingredients while cooking.

If you happen to have some leftover cinnamon sticks left, you can use those. Or maybe you needed a couple of lemons or oranges for your recipe of the day. You can set those aside and utilize them to your advantage.

2.   Open up windows and close doors
Now, this is the easiest tip I can give you. If you’re living in an apartment, you’re bound to have a window or two, even if they’re small.

So before cooking, I urge you to open them all up and keep your front door closed. That way, your neighbors and the public hallway don’t end up getting a whiff of the odor.

This tip even has an added bonus if you have an electric fan. You can set it up facing towards your open window, so that it pushes air to the outside world.

3.   Make use of coffee grounds
This one’s for all the coffee lovers out there!

If you personally brew your coffee in the morning, then you’ll be happy to know that your leftover coffee grounds can be quite useful. You need not boil or do anything else to it.

Just get a small bowl, put your coffee grounds there, and leave it on your kitchen counter.

Another use for these magical leftovers: you can rub them on smelly hands. If you’ve been handling garlic or fish while cooking, you can use these coffee grounds to get rid of the funky odor.

4.   Clean immediately
This is a rather tedious task, but I’d recommend doing it after cooking or before crashing on the couch for some well-deserved rest.

Stacked up dirty dishes in your sink and food splatters on your countertop are certainly not pretty sights.

Not only that, but it adds more strong odors to the already existing stinky smell after cooking.

So, if the other tips aren’t your cup of tea, then maybe this one will work for you.

5.   Maximize white vinegar
If you’re your own chef in the kitchen at home, then that means you’ve got the basic stuff for cooking.

Frying pans, pots, salt, pepper, and of course, vinegar. White vinegar, in particular, can help you a lot to get rid of cooking smells.

All you need to do is boil it in a shallow pan with a bit of water for around fifteen minutes and voila! You will be able to successfully neutralize the odors in your apartment.

You can even use white vinegar as a cleaning agent.

So after cooking, try cleaning your kitchen (like de-greasing the range hood) with vinegar rinse-free. Just mix it with about half a gallon of warm water and you’re good to go.

  Final thoughts
Cooking is a lot of fun for many people. And it can definitely be more fun if your condo doesn’t stink of onions or fish after.

So, try some of the tips given above that appeal to you and prepare to unlock yet another secret to awesome independent living!
